Rosie comments: on stuttering research

Rosie Nicholson, Director of Speech Therapy Surrey London, comments on research that confirms genetic links to stuttering: "This research is really encouraging and reinforces what we see in clinic every day: early intervention is absolutely key. The earlier we can support a child who is showing signs of stuttering, the better the long-term outcomes for their confidence, communication skills, and overall wellbeing. It’s not just about fluency - it’s about helping individuals find their voice, feel heard, and thrive socially and emotionally.

"The findings also highlight the importance of seeing stuttering through a broader neurodiversity lens, which can help reduce stigma and increase understanding.

"At our clinic, we often work with families who are navigating intergenerational patterns of stuttering. This research provides hope that one day we might offer support before a child even begins to stutter."
